The Background

There are a few reasons why I took on this drawing as a project. Firstly, I wanted to get into an area where I could get the type of subject matter and areas that I plan to target long-term into place. One of these areas is the more sparsley covered topic of action and extreme sports.

I knew this was the area I wished to target, so the next step was to find an image to work from. Fortunately this wasn't a major issue as Stephen English, a friend/ex-colleague, is a GP photographer and before I ever decided to properly target this area the photo, on which the work below, was already after catching my eye as a powerful image. The body language is extremely intense and is clearly highlights the risks that athletes such as Esteve Rabat (Moto GP 2) driver take as part of their profession.

The Image

The image below is pretty detailed, it's approximately 17"x13" and created using pencils(6H-9B), kneaded erasers, colour movers and blending stumps. There is approximately 100 hours of work gone into the piece. I feel the images really don't do the piece justice, but I think that's always the case with photos of pieces. :)
